RE: [Honda-C70] Testing for float valve leak from carburetor

Hotcomb : The first path for extra gas that leaks into the carb to exit should be the float bowl vent tube that drains through the same tube as the bowl drain screw. So it is not likely that gas would run down the manifold into the cylinder but it may be possible. You might also try leaving some air space in the gas tank so the gas can expand with temperature changes. Or a long shot of a pin hole leak near the top of the tank that drips down on the back of the motor inside the frame then runs forward to drip off the footrest/stand. Good Luck ! Baby Huey

Thanks for the reply Baby Huey. I tried a few tests today. I had a new strainer to put in the petcock anyway so I pulled the line. In the off position no drips. Took off the sediment bowl and put in the new wire mesh. Reassembled, added gas and still no leakage. Not even a drop. Best I can tell is I am getting kind of a burp effect. The air in the bowl swaps with the gas in the line and the extra fuel filter. It must be enough to spill into the manifold and down. Since I don't have a replacement float valve I did the next best thing. I had a spare ball valve and installed it right before the bowl, the bronze fuel type of filter canister is after that and then the line up to the petcock. At least that way when I shutoff the ballcock it can't pull more in. Looks a little funky of course but I will try that until I can get a rebuild kit. Drained the oil and put in fresh 30w. We'll see...

Vote for the two party system. One on Friday and one on Saturday!

Hotcomb: Have you tried putting a can or jar under the float bowl drain tube to see if that is where gas is leaking ? Or remove the 2 screws on the petcock & put that over a can or cup or jar to see if that leaks ? The only way I can think of to check the crankcase to see if gas MAY be leaking in is to look at the dip stick . See if the level is higher in a few days. The float bowl drain tube also acts as the drain for the float bowl vent/overflow tube. Pull the plug out of the bottom of the PCV drain hose . Not on the clean garage floor over a pan. You might get as much as a cup of nasty water/oil/gas from the intake & crankcase vent in there that could be the source of your gassy smell. Good Luck ! Baby Huey PS don`t forget to put the plug back in the PCV drain hose.

I have a strong gas odor and I suspect it is getting into the crankcase. Trying to figure a way to test for this? If I run the motor lightly until warm, leave the petcock on, then pull the oil drain plug and let it sit, will I eventually see gas come out the drain plug hole?

I have a clear fuel filter on after the petcock and it seems to me that even if I turn it off, with the filter and fuel line full, I can come back sometime later (day or two) and find air in the line. Between that and the smell I figure it has to be going somewhere.

Suggestions?
