[Honda-C70] Testing for float valve leak from carburetor

I have a strong gas odor and I suspect it is getting into the crankcase. Trying to figure a way to test for this? If I run the motor lightly until warm, leave the petcock on, then pull the oil drain plug and let it sit, will I eventually see gas come out the drain plug hole?

I have a clear fuel filter on after the petcock and it seems to me that even if I turn it off, with the filter and fuel line full, I can come back sometime later (day or two) and find air in the line. Between that and the smell I figure it has to be going somewhere.
