OK
There are three possable answers to this question. (OK 4!)
1. the hoses to the fuel tank / fuel selector valve are crossed. ie the stand pipe in the tank (with the tank low of fuel you can look in and see the pipe)
2. you are reading the position of the fuel valve wrong and have been on reserve and not what Honda calls "O" for "ON"
3. you are reading the valve position correct but the rubber gasket inside the fuel selector is leaking so you are drawing off "ON & Reserve" at the same time.
4. the stand pipe in the tank is missing or cracked.
The only way to tell a few of the above is a few simple tests. With the tank empty or close to empty, look in with a flash light an look at the stand pipe.
Then put a metal tray under the bike and open the carb float bowl drain and drain fuel out of the tank. If you have gas in the tank it should drain
out with the fuel valve to "R" and stop at "OFF" and "ON" (with the fuel level below the stand pipe)
If it keeps running out, then you have the fun of trying to figure out why. On my 1982 the fuel valve was leaking between Reserve and ON, but the
new one does it every once in a while so I have to keep my eye on it.

today i ran my bike out of gas and when i switched to the reserve tank... NOTHING! is there something i'm missing? i know the line is clear, so is there something special i need to do to fill that tank?
