ACLU in Lee County?
WTF? I can't even BELIEVE what I received in my son's backpack today. Here's the top paragraph of the letter sent home with him today:
Ok, obviously they're trying to avoid an "establishment of religion". There's a flaw here, though.
My son comes home with pumpkin projects. WITH jack-o-lantern faces. I'm assuming he'll be making Thanksgiving turkeys, and Christmas trees also.
Now, if you just wanted to have summer break, and get rid of all other breaks, and all traces of religion in school, so be it. I couldn't argue. So what am I ANGRY about?
The fact that these religious holidays are being RE-INVENTED to suit a pseudo-purpose. This is a stupid attempt at re-writing history. Jack-o-lanterns were created for the PAGAN holiday of Halloween to ward off evil spirits. Jack-o-lanterns can only be associated with this holiday, or you are RE-INVENTING it!!!
Valentine's day, is after a CHRISTIAN SAINT!!! So, WHY on EARTH are you getting rid of Christmas, yet keeping Valentine's day??? This is completely asinine!
Will my son still bring home colored EASTER eggs and colorings of the EASTER bunny, or are these things now RE-INVENTED into "spring eggs" and "spring bunny"???
Will my son still color CHRISTMAS presents, and color SANTA??? If Christmas is now forbidden, what will they call these projects, or how will you explain that now Christmas is evil to the public school system, and while it is ok to color Santa Claus, it is not ok to sing Christmas songs because the ACLU wants to ruin your fun???
Leave it to the liberals. I don't live anywhere near Chicago, where I see that having so many ethic groups this might raise a problem. Lee County is 93% white, and if you remove the "metropolitan" area of Dixon, that number is most likely now near 97%. You don't have immigration here. Maybe someday, 100 years from now!
So why the change, for ONE person that complained? Was there a vote for this? I didn't see anything about it. When I was in school we ALWAYS had Christmas concerts, and Halloween parties. We would even sing Jewish songs, even when there wasn't any Jewish students. Atheists don't have celebrations at all. And, BTW, Kwanzaa isn't even REAL. It was invented in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga to give the African Americans something to celebrate about their culture. Kwanzaa is more comparable to German Fest in Milwaukee, WI than it is to a religious holiday.
So, where's the conflict? Because hindu's in Lee County IL (do not get me laughing) are offended by Christmas songs? If you want to talk about tolerance, why is it that Christians are not offended by Halloween, since it is Pagan? So, if Christians in the public school system can manage to celebrate Jewish and Pagan holidays, who is complaining? The Atheists? I'm not a Christian, and this has me so damn mad, only because there's still a celebration here, from exploiting religious holidays.
I WILL get to the bottom of this, because either the parties stay as they have for the past 300 years or there are NO parties. I will NOT have my country's history be re-invented to keep the "good part" of celebrating religion, but erase the foundation of what put the celebration there to begin with. My kids are not stupid, and will NOT be dumbed down by the re-writing of this country's history. MY children will celebrate as our country's schools ALWAYS have, or they're not going to these stupid parties.
"Dear Parents:
RE: School Parties
This year at Central School, there will be a small change at our normal seasonal and holiday parties. Instead of a Halloween party, we will be having an Autumn party. There will be no costumes. Instead of a Christmas party, it will be a Winter party. We will have a Valentine Exchange on Valentine's Day and instead of an Easter party, we will have a Spring party."
Ok, obviously they're trying to avoid an "establishment of religion". There's a flaw here, though.

I see what you're saying, but I guess I don't really understand your anger. And I don't know why Kwanzaa isn't "real." Weren't all the holidays invented, at least to a certain extent?

it looks like it will be private schools in our household. First the religous holidays are gone and the next thing will be the ethical standards that religon represents. As the public school system and society slowly slips into the abyss we have the ACLU to thank.

That's one of the reasons we homeschool honey.
Desperate House husband - don't forget that homeschooling is an option. Alot cheaper than private school too.
I can't stand the agenda of the government school system. Plus - they do a really crappy job at educating our kids.
Halloween is one of my FAVORITE holidays!

- Yeesh - try a little more simplistic analysis of the world. LOL - it's all Clinton's fault. It's all the ACLU's fault.
So far, all I have seen from the so-called private, "Christian" schools and churches is uber-zealotry (Pat Robertson, Falwell), ethical 'lapses' (shall I recount the 6000 or so instances of abuse in the Catholic and Baptist church schools) and money laundering (numerous, too numerous to name).
So, desperate househusband, before you go on your white horse saving your children from the horrors of liberalism in public schools - perhaps save your kids and yourself from the hypocrisy that the church breeds and the simple-mindedness of your comments.
The ACLU has its faults. So does Tom Delay's money laundering organization...I am not blaming him for the fall of the empire...

Go for it. The idiots are never going to rest until they have created a society that most of us don't want. Why do they want to eliminate our culture? Why do we let a minority of nitwits control us? Nathan has lost it, but I better stop before I lose it too.

Did I miss something? Did househusband say that he was sending his kids to Catholic school?
Does Nathan believe that government schools are doing a great job? Haven't done some funny-money stuff themselves? Are bastions of safety for our children?

In response:
"Does Nathan believe that government schools are doing a great job?"
Absolutely, in many cases, they are. Are there failures? Yes. The point is, that painting with a broad brush and establishing these schools as bastions of liberal ideology, unsafe, or 'havens for the ACLU' is simplistic and hyperbolic. Painting them as complete failures across the board, again is as problematic as saying the entire so of issues that America faces right now are all Bush's fault and the GOPs (notice, though, they are in control of all three branches of government).
I am supportive of your right to homeschool, and I am supportive of those who choose to send their kids to private schools. What I am not supportive of is this notion that somehow all of our children are doomed by attending public schools and they hold little value than upholding liberal values. I would contend, at least in most school districts, this is not the case.
'Haven't done some funny-money stuff themselves? Are bastions of safety for our children?"
You obviously missed the point of my comments: that to simplistically assess that all schools are bad, that all issues stem from the ACLU, that private schools are the only option to 'protect' our children is myopic and indicative that somewere the schools failed househusband...
For TechKnight:
"Why do they want to eliminate our culture? Why do we let a minority of nitwits control us? Nathan has lost it, but I better stop before I lose it too."
Eliminate WHOSE culture? What in the world do you mean? Our culture? How do you define OUR culture?
It's easier to slip into hyperbole and stating someone has 'lost it' rather than deal with the argument at hand: househusband's comments were simplistic and logically inadequate. Is that educationally elitist? I thought we want to heighten the educational abilities of our children and fellow Americans? Or does this only really mean that unless we all embrace conservative ideology, we are somehow educationally deficient?

Only Europeans are allowed to create holidays. Didn't you get the memo?

Suffer? You need some perspective.

You should ask the schoolteacher if since she's making the kids respect Kwanzaa, will she be teaching the students about the background of the founder of Kwanzaa?
Oh yeah THAT sotry makes for great holiday fodder.
The guy was a torturer and rapist.
Yeah I'd be celebrating a holiday that was the brainchild of that kind of scum.

I am happy that you are supportive of the right of parents to homeschool. As for the government school system not being a failure, I think you need to check a few things. American children are looking pretty bad when compared to their counterparts internationally.
A Nation at Risk - the original and the follow up 20 years later - is not a heartening read.
I believe that we need to be a bit more alarmed about the state of our government schools than we are. This problem deserves our attention. This problem needs to be looked at with a very hard eye. The government is not doing a good job schooling our children at all. Saying that the situation is not that bad is not enough - and it's not the truth.
